  • The Princess of Wales finished her chemotherapy treatment in September of that same year
  • In January 2025, Middleton announced that she is in remission

Kate Middleton is in remission from cancer and has returned to her royal duties.

In March 2024, the Princess of Wales announced her cancer diagnosis, which came as a “huge shock” to Middleton, as well as the rest of the world.

“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous,” she said in the emotional video released on March 22, sharing that after she underwent tests following the surgery, it was determined that “cancer had been present.”

Kate completed chemotherapy in September 2024 and slowly returned to her royal duties in the months that followed. The treatments proved successful, and in January 2025, she announced that she is in remission.

During an appearance on Heart Breakfast in May 2026, Prince William said his wife is in “good form” following a challenging couple of years.

“She’s an amazing mum, an amazing wife, and, literally, our family couldn’t cope without her. She’s been absolutely stunning, brilliant,” he said, adding that he’s “so proud, very, very proud” of Kate’s resilience.

Here’s everything to know about Kate Middleton’s cancer, including her diagnosis, treatment and remission.

When Kate underwent “major abdominal surgery” in January 2024, doctors originally believed her condition to be non-cancerous.

Kate received her surgery at The London Clinic, where she stayed for 13 days during her recovery. Upon her release, the palace issued a statement, saying that she was “making good progress.”

“The Princess of Wales has returned home to Windsor to continue her recovery from surgery. She is making good progress,” Kensington Palace said in a statement. “The Prince and Princess wish to say a huge thank you to the entire team at The London Clinic, especially the dedicated nursing staff, for the care they have provided.”

Though the abdominal surgery was successful, Kate underwent tests after the operation, during which doctors discovered that “cancer had been present.”

Around the same time on Feb. 5, 2024, the palace announced that King Charles was diagnosed with cancer following treatment for a benign prostate enlargement.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual,” the statement said.

King Charles and Queen Camilla were subsequently informed of Kate’s cancer news.

Kate revealed her cancer diagnosis to the public in March 2024, but she did not specify which type of cancer she had been diagnosed with. The princess shared in her video that she and William were managing her health privately “for the sake of [their] young family” as they tried to find an “appropriate” way to tell their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

“It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful,” she said.

Following her video announcement, a Kensington Palace spokesperson said, “We will not be sharing any further private medical information. The Princess has a right to medical privacy, as we all do.”

Following her diagnosis, Kate was advised to begin chemotherapy.

“Tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment,” she said in March 2024.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson told PEOPLE in March 2024 that King Charles was “so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did” about her cancer diagnosis.

The spokesperson added that Charles “remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law” throughout her treatment.

In September 2024, Kate announced that she had finished chemotherapy after months of treatment.

“The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant, and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown,” she said in a video filmed near her family’s home in Norfolk.

“Doing what I can to stay cancer-free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long, and I must continue to take each day as it comes,” Kate continued.

Following the news of Princess Kate’s planned surgery back in January 2024, PEOPLE reported that William was expected to postpone some engagements to be by Kate’s side. The following day, he was photographed driving himself to visit Kate at the hospital.

The prince continued to support the princess through her cancer treatment, as Kate reiterated in her March 2024 video message.

“Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance, too,” she said. “As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both.”

After finishing her chemotherapy treatment, Kate said that her health crisis put many things into perspective for her and William.

“This time has, above all, reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved,” she said in September 2024.

In the following months, she stepped out for Remembrance Sunday and hosted her annual “Together at Christmas” carol service.

During a January 2026 visit to a hospital with Prince William, Kate referenced her own treatment for cancer. A volunteer spoke about how patients and visitors are there “for hours,” to which Princess Kate replied, “I know,” per Hello! magazine.

“We know,” she then added, touching Prince William’s arm.

During the visit, Prince William also referenced his wife’s cancer treatment before a roundtable discussion, telling staff (via The Sun), “Both of us have had different experiences with hospitals. Me working with the air ambulance; Catherine with her recent health journey.”

In February 2026, Kate commemorated World Cancer Day while referencing her own journey.

“As anyone who has experienced this journey will know, it’s not linear,” she said in a video posted on Instagram. “There are moments of fear and exhaustion. But also moments of strength, kindness and profound connection.”

Most recently, Kate visited Italy in May 2026 — her first overseas work trip since she announced her cancer diagnosis.

“[This visit] is an important step in the princess’s recovery journey. She takes great joy from this work,” a royal aide said.
