Based on the 2022 novel by Shelby Van Pelt, Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures follows Tova (Sally Field), who lives a quiet, isolated life in a small Pacific Northwest town.

Decades after her teenage son mysteriously died, Tova finds herself alone in the wake of her husband’s recent death. She finds comfort in her job at the local aquarium, where she befriends a curmudgeonly octopus, Marcellus (voiced by Alfred Molina).

Everything changes when a down-on-his-luck drifter named Cameron (Lewis Pullman) arrives in town. Cameron has never known his father, and his mother has recently died of an overdose after spending the last few years of her life living in a van. Desperate for answers and financial security, Cameron comes to town believing his biological father is from there.

Serendipity happens when Tova sprains her ankle and needs some additional help at the aquarium. Desperate for money, Cameron takes the job, and the two slowly grow closer, each looking for love and family after being left alone in the world.

Tova decides to help Cameron on his quest to find his father, but the only clue to who his father might be is his dad’s old class ring with the inscription “EELS” engraved into it. Throughout the movie, the two grow closer as they embark on various misadventures looking for Cameron’s father.

But the film’s ending provides a shocking revelation that changes both of their lives forever. Here’s the Remarkably Bright Creatures ending, explained.

In the film’s finale, Cameron gets upset because every lead he had on his father’s identity has run dry. One night at the aquarium, he lets out some of his anger by throwing his father’s class ring into the eel tank.

Marcellus is way ahead of Tova and Cameron, and has already deduced that the class ring is the key to everything. Knowing that Tova will come looking for him if he escapes his tank, Marcellus breaks out, sneaks into the eel tank to grab the ring and then starts making his way to the aquarium’s back door.

When Tova notices a wet streak leading away from Marcellus’ tank, she goes looking for him and finds the octopus on the floor next to the back door, looking out at the sea. She realizes what he wants: freedom, a return to the ocean. Knowing that Marcellus is in the later years of his life, she decides to set him free.

She takes him out to the dock and slowly lowers him into the water. As he starts to swim away, Tova tearfully says goodbye, and Marcellus replies, “Goodbye, my friend.” But Tova notices that Marcellus has left something behind, the ring. She looks at the engraving and starts crying, now knowing exactly who Cameron’s father is.

Later that night, Cameron finds Tova sitting at the dock, and she tells him to sit down because she has something to tell him. “My son’s name was Eric Ernst Lingram Sullivan,” she says. “It’s his ring.” Cameron holds the ring in shock, realizing that Tova has been his grandmother this whole time.

The next day, Cameron is cleaning Eric’s old bedroom so he can move into it, but he notices a few creaky, loose floorboards under a rug. He lifts up the wood planks and finds a box. He calls Tova into the room, and together they open it.

Inside, they find photos of Eric with Cameron’s mom when they were teenagers, as well as a list of boy names with Cameron circled. “He named you,” Tova says, now realizing what caused her son’s mood changes in the final days before his death. He had gotten a girl pregnant and was scared.

Tova undergoes a big transformation by the end of the movie. At the start of the film, she’s locked herself away in an isolated life, completely built around her grief and loneliness. But thanks to Marcellus and Cameron, she learns to open up and embrace the world again.

A big focus of the story is showing how Tova has spent so much of her life consumed by the deaths of her son and husband that she’s forgotten how to live. But in the final scene of the movie, Tova and Cameron are having a cookout at their house, surrounded by friends, showing that she’s finally started letting people back in.

Throughout the movie, audiences learn from both the aquarium’s marine biologist and from Marcellus’ inner monologues that he’s near the end of his lifespan. Luckily, viewers never actually see Marcellus die.

Instead, in his final scene, he swims through the ocean, enjoying his newfound freedom.

He makes his way to the seafloor and finds a nice nook under a coral overhang. He slides his way inside and curls up, finally happy and free. Marcellus says he’ll likely die soon, but that he’s happy to spend his final days feeling the freshness and liveliness of the open sea.
