The duo revealed that much of their on-screen magic came from spontaneous improvisation, creating an environment that felt incredibly free. Pullman admitted to feeling like a “lightweight in the ring with a heavyweight” alongside Field, though Field quickly praised his depth, noting that his performance was completely immersive.

In a departure from the original book, the film introduces a poignant new sequence where Cameron performs at an open mic night.

Author Shelby Van Pelt, who made a cameo in the background of the scene, confessed that watching Pullman sing and play the guitar brought her to tears on set.

 Field jokingly shared that Pullman, who is a drummer by trade, dreaded the musical performance, yet delivered a soulful rendition that “shattered” everyone watching.

Beyond the human element, the film places a unique focus on the wonders of the ocean, particularly through Marcellus, a remarkably intelligent giant Pacific octopus.

Van Pelt explained that she chose an octopus as a central character because the species remains scientifically mysterious, allowing for artistic liberty and a touch of fantasy.

To bring Marcellus’s world to life, director Olivia Newman utilized extensive, breathtaking underwater footage captured by local divers, making the ocean feel as vast and wondrous as outer space.
