Despite the cold, rainy weather in Wales, Princess Kate’s radiant smile and Prince William’s down-to-earth and approachable demeanor truly warmed the hearts of thousands of fans during their visit on St. David’s Day.

However, during their recent visit to Wales, the Prince and Princess of Wales offered a completely different perspective. Willing to brave the rain for nearly half an hour, proactively asking the car to stop to chat with locals, casually playing rock-paper-scissors with children, and happily sampling local cider… all these everyday, genuine, and simple moments of Kate and William proved that warmth from the heart can overcome any barrier, even the harshest weather.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ visit to County Powys took place just before St. David’s Day (Wales’ national holiday) on an afternoon when the weather was far from ideal. A heavy downpour made the air damp and chilly, but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the people who had waited for hours to meet their beloved members of the Royal Family. Radiant in an elegant burgundy coat paired with a matching Me+Em blouse and stylish knee-high boots, Princess Kate captivated everyone’s attention with her ever-present smile. Both she and William wore yellow daffodils on their lapels – a proud symbol of the region.
Instead of quickly moving indoors to avoid getting wet, the couple made a decision that moved everyone present to tears. They asked the convoy to stop in the middle of the road, got out, and, shielding themselves with umbrellas, walked towards the cheering crowd. The couple spent nearly 30 minutes strolling, shaking hands, exchanging warm hugs, and even playfully playing rock-paper-scissors with the people huddled in the cold rain. This unexpected enthusiasm and friendliness caused their schedule to be delayed by 50 minutes, but seeing Kate rushing to the children who were soaking wet from waiting for her, one could understand that for them, no schedule was more important than the affection of the people.

Stepping inside The Hanging Gardens community center – a cozy complex encompassing a café, community gardens, art spaces, and a cinema – the royal couple completely shed their aloof demeanor to blend seamlessly into the lives of the local people. The scene was reminiscent of a lively neighborhood gathering, where William happily sipped on local cider and jokingly remarked, “If someone offered me a glass of cider, I’d definitely drink it all,” while Kate delightedly sampled a unique blend of pomegranate and orange juice.
The image of the future Prince of England rolling up his sleeves and flipping traditional Welsh pastries on a tiny griddle in the communal kitchen, listening to the locals share their worries about daily life and the burden of high living costs, created a very genuine and intimate feeling. They left with arms full of simple but heartfelt gifts, from an iron hook forged by a 21-year-old blacksmith on the spot, a box of fragrant chocolates hastily bought at the market, to a whimsical colored pencil drawing carefully laminated by local children.

The more one observes, the more one realizes that the brightest aspect of this trip is the way William and Kate interact with the young children, revealing their tender parental instincts. Seeing a group of preschoolers waving self-colored Welsh flags, William couldn’t hide his excitement, exclaiming, “Oh, I must go greet the little ones!” and quickly reaching for an umbrella. Princess Kate also kindly offered her own umbrella to shield them, asking, “Would you like to come stand under my umbrella?” She even playfully feigned surprise when three-year-old Joseph deliberately growled to tease her.
The most endearing moment was when the motorcade was about to leave Newtown but had to stop again because of the crowds lining both sides of the road. The couple decided to split up and walk along either side to greet as many people as possible. But when a little boy in a green dinosaur-patterned coat shyly told William that he was waiting to meet the Princess, the Prince didn’t hesitate to turn back, weaving through the crowd of police and reporters to find his wife and fulfill the young fan’s wish.
Kate immediately ran over, knelt down to eye level with the boy, and affectionately said, “It’s so nice to see you. These flowers are so beautiful, aren’t they? I love daffodils. Are you getting very wet standing here? Thank you for coming to see us.” That day ended with a deeply moving scene when 90-year-old former councillor Gareth Morgan gently patted William on the shoulder and said, “God bless you,” while also reminding him that everyone was thinking of his family.
