The chaotic, unpredictable, and downright unhinged Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill) is officially making his explosive return to Emmerdale this week. He is rolling back into the Dales armed with three distinct things: absolute chaos, a colossal family secret, and a stellar lemon drizzle cake recipe.
Fans will vividly remember Kev’s wild introduction last year as Robert Sugden’s (Ryan Hawley) “prison husband.” After spinning a dark web of lies about a terminal illness to secure an early compassionate release, Kev tracked Robert to the village to continue their romance. What followed was a spectacular double-life disaster, culminating in a terrifying hostage showdown where Kev held Robert, Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller), and Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) at bay with a stolen pawn-shop sword.
After a brief, calmer cameo at the end of 2025 to warn Aaron about John Sugden’s dangerous schemes, Kev has been laying low. But his quiet era is officially over.
From Swords to Slices: Welcome to ‘A Slice of Kev-en’
When viewers first catch sight of Kev this week, they won’t find him wielding a weapon. Instead, he’s undergone a bizarre culinary rebrand.
“When we meet Kev, he’s running his own mobile patisserie experience. He’s got a cake van. It’s called ‘A Slice of Kev-en’,” actor Chris Coghill joyfully revealed. “So, that’s what he’s up to. That’s what he was doing, and that’s what he might well bring to the village.”
The Ultimate Paternal Test: Lewis in Mortal Danger
While the cake van brings the comedy, the drama hits a breaking point almost instantly. Unbeknownst to young Lewis Barton (Bradley Riches), Kev is actually his biological father.
With Lewis being violently ambushed and kidnapped by masked thugs in broad daylight, Kev’s return coincides with a race against time. When Dr. Liam Cavanagh tracks Kev down to his mobile bakery to deliver the horrifying news, Kev’s initial instinct is to run. However, the revelation that his estranged son’s life is hanging by a thread changes everything.
“When he finds out that Lewis is in jeopardy, that his life is in danger, his paternal instincts kick in,” Chris Coghill explained. “And he does care. Of course, he cares.”
Discussing whether Kev has what it takes to step up as a genuine father figure once the dust settles and the secret inevitably spills, Chris admitted it will be a beautifully messy redemption arc.
“One of the things we already knew about Kev from last time was that he didn’t have a brilliant upbringing himself,” the actor noted. “So, if he steps into a fatherly role, he will try to right some of the wrongs that he feels from his own past. But he’s not going to be brilliant at it. Look at him! It’s not going to come particularly naturally.”
Next Stop: Bringing Down the Tates?
While saving his son is top priority, Chris Coghill already has his sights set on long-term village domination for his eccentric character. When asked what else he wants on his Emmerdale bucket list, the actor didn’t hold back.
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, at some point, I’d quite like Kev to take down the Tates.”
With Home Farm always in need of a shake-up, a rogue baker with a dark past might just be the unexpected force to catch the Tate empire completely off guard.
