Royal divorces often come with distance, awkwardness, and carefully managed appearances.
Not this one.
More than four years after her divorce from Peter Phillips was finalised, Autumn Phillips was once again seen alongside Princess Anne at the Gatcombe Park Horse Trials. Not as a guest on the sidelines. Not as an outsider. But as someone who appeared completely at ease within the family circle.
According to royal photographer James Whatling, Autumn was “obviously still part of the family” and was chatting with Anne and other relatives while supporting Zara Tindall throughout the event.
That raises an interesting question.
When a marriage ends, does family end too?
Autumn and Peter separated in 2019 after more than a decade of marriage and share two daughters, Savannah and Isla. Their divorce could easily have created distance between Autumn and the royal family. Instead, she continues to appear at family events and remains part of the close-knit support network surrounding Anne, Zara and Peter.
Princess Anne has always been known for her loyalty, practicality and fierce devotion to family. Some would argue that once someone becomes the mother of her grandchildren, that bond does not simply disappear because a marriage does.
Others believe a former daughter-in-law should naturally step back and allow everyone to move on.
Meanwhile, Peter has now married Harriet Sperling, beginning a new chapter in his life. Yet Autumn still appears welcome within the wider family circle, suggesting that the Phillips-Tindall family may view relationships differently from many people.
In an age where family divisions often dominate headlines, this quieter story may be one of the most unusual royal relationships of all.
