He once feared he would never feel “normal” again.
Now, decades on, Michael Ball is opening up about the deeply personal ordeal that shaped his private life — and the partner who quietly helped him rebuild it.
The much-loved musical theatre star, 63, has spoken candidly about the devastating aftermath of a traumatic accident in his teens, revealing how it left him embarrassed, isolated, and without a sexual relationship for years. But behind the scenes, a steady, enduring love story was beginning — one that has lasted more than three decades.
Michael, who rose to fame in the 1980s thanks to his West End success and remains a familiar face on British television, is currently appearing on Saturday Kitchen Live. Yet away from the spotlight, his life is defined by something far more ordinary — and far more precious.
At home, he shares a quiet, stable life with his partner Cathy McGowan, 83, who is 20 years his senior. The pair have been together for an extraordinary 32 years, a relationship Michael says grounded him when he needed it most.
The couple first met in the 1980s when Cathy — then an entertainment reporter at the BBC and a household name thanks to Ready Steady Go! — interviewed Michael for his musical Aspects of Love. Sparks flew almost immediately. By 1992, they were living together, and their bond has only strengthened since.
But the foundation of their relationship was forged in vulnerability.
Michael has previously recalled a charity parachute jump that went catastrophically wrong when he was just 18. The accident left him plummeting toward the ground at four times the intended speed before being dragged along the floor. The injuries were severe: internal bleeding, a ruptured groin, and years of surgery that followed.
The physical damage had a lasting emotional toll.
“It was very difficult to come to terms with,” Michael admitted. “I was so embarrassed by what had happened to me down below that I didn’t tell anyone for six months.”
The injuries left him impotent and struggling with his sense of self. For more than four years, he avoided intimacy altogether.
“All I ever thought was, will I ever be normal?” he said. “I didn’t feel adequate to be with the rest of the lads running with all the girls. I didn’t have a sexual relationship for years.”
It was Cathy, he says, who changed everything.
“She taught me not to feel like a freak,” Michael revealed. “She made me feel attractive for me — not for being Mr Entertainment.”
Today, the singer speaks with visible gratitude about the life they’ve built together.
“I love my home. I love the normality of my life with Cathy,” he shared — a simple sentence that carries the weight of everything he once feared he’d never have.
