Dame Esther Rantzen, the Channel 4 star and campaigner, is facing life with terminal stage 4 lung and breast cancer, but her spirit remains unbroken. As she approaches her 86th birthday, her daughter Rebecca Wilcox, 46, shared an emotional update o
n Vanessa, revealing the small but profound joys her mother continues to embrace.
âItâs her birthday coming up. Sheâs going to be 86 which is brilliant. Sheâs as astonished as anybody that sheâs still here,â Rebecca said. âWe are so grateful. Every day is a wonderful miracle and we really are cherishing it.âÂ
Despite her illness, Esther continues to enjoy her beloved garden at home, a project she built alongside her late husband Desmond from a dilapidated farm. Rebecca added: âHer garden is her passion⊠it is gorgeous. Sheâs an early adopter of rewilding. Monty Don has nothing on her.â
The broadcasterâs dedication extends beyond her home. Esther has long campaigned with Dignity in Dying, advocating for terminally ill people in the UK to have the right to choose how and when they die. Her work, alongside fellow campaigner Prue Leith, earned her a place on the 2026 Women in Westminster: The 100 list, highlighting her extraordinary influence.
Rebeccaâs heartfelt words remind fans of the courage, gratitude, and joy that Esther continues to inspire, even amid lifeâs toughest battles. Every smile, every garden stroll, and every campaign effort is a testament to a life lived fully, despite adversity.
