Dame Esther Rantzen, the Channel 4 star and campaigner, is facing life with terminal stage 4 lung and breast cancer, but her spirit remains unbroken. As she approaches her 86th birthday, her daughter Rebecca Wilcox, 46, shared an emotional update on Vanessa, revealing the small but profound joys her mother continues to embrace.

“It’s her birthday coming up. She’s going to be 86 which is brilliant. She’s as astonished as anybody that she’s still here,” Rebecca said. “We are so grateful. Every day is a wonderful miracle and we really are cherishing it.” 

Despite her illness, Esther continues to enjoy her beloved garden at home, a project she built alongside her late husband Desmond from a dilapidated farm. Rebecca added: “Her garden is her passion… it is gorgeous. She’s an early adopter of rewilding. Monty Don has nothing on her.” 

The broadcaster’s dedication extends beyond her home. Esther has long campaigned with Dignity in Dying, advocating for terminally ill people in the UK to have the right to choose how and when they die. Her work, alongside fellow campaigner Prue Leith, earned her a place on the 2026 Women in Westminster: The 100 list, highlighting her extraordinary influence.
