The following article contains spoilers from the episode of Emmerdale dated June 3. It hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX and YouTube.

Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) has taken a major step in his recovery following his prostate cancer diagnosis in Emmerdale.

The character had his operation last month, and has found it difficult to get his head around the side-effects of the surgery.

At first, Cain had to get used to wearing a catheter. When he had it removed, he viewed it as a sign that things were returning to normal, and headed to the pub to celebrate.

Cain got quite drunk, which meant he staggered home when he left the pub. On his way, he got caught short and had to go to the loo at the side of the road.

He was then approached by PC Swirling (Andy Moore) and his colleague, who arrested him for being drunk and disorderly and urinating in public.

Cain spent the night in a cell, but the fact that he couldn’t control his bladder in front of two officers hurt his pride far more.

Cain attempted to return to work a few days ago but just as he left Wishing Well, he had to rush upstairs to go to the toilet again. Because the usual signs of needing the loo aren’t always there for Cain at the moment, he has decided to hide himself away from the world to prevent anymore embarrassing mishaps.

This approach is now having an impact on Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) but also Kyle Winchester (Huey Quinn). While Moira is aware of Cain’s worries, Kyle doesn’t understand completely, and has convinced himself that his dad doesn’t want to spend time with him anymore.

In today’s episode, Moira told Cain to drive Kyle back to school but he didn’t want to. Cain was pretty insistent that he wouldn’t be going, and failed to think about how Kyle might process his words.

Cain was then paid a visit by best mate Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson). The local GP reminded Cain that it’s important to put measures in place to aid the fact he might not gain full control of his bladder in the near future.

But Cain really didn’t want to. ‘It’s not me’, he said.

Liam understood Cain’s comments, but pointed out that things have changed, and that him and his family deserve better.

Cain does find Liam incredibly annoying at times, but also accepts when his friend is making a valid point.

When Moira returned home, she found Cain in the process of ordering some leak-proof underwear.

Not wanting his insecurities to impact his family, this was another big step for Cain.

Unbeknownst to him at the moment, Kyle is growing distant from his father, and is now spending time with Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough).

Graham told the boy today that he’s signed him up to cadets. He knows that Kyle is the Emmerdale Farm firestarter, and wants to help him turn his life around and give him a positive focus.

How will Cain react when he finds out what his son has been up to?
