Princess Catherine has a “very funny” habit that her late mother-in-law Princess Diana was also known for. Royal journalist Emily Andrews recently shared an amusing insight into what Kate is like away from the cameras and ceremony, revealing that the royal has an impish eye for a practical joke.
Speaking on the Catching Up With the Royals podcast, she illustrated an example of Kate’s great sense of humour during a tour to Australia with husband and heir to the throne Prince William. The pair had to stand in a specific spot during an appearance, with the exact place “marked out on the floor with a plastic spider”. But spotting an opportunity for a prank, she took the plastic creepy crawlie and “crept ‘round the back of the sofa to where one of her aides was sitting, and she knew that he didn’t like spiders”.

The royal was then said to have dropped it into the lap of the aide who “nearly hit the roof, and obviously, everyone thought it was very funny, including, I should say, the aide”, Marie Claire reported.
During Prince Harry’s bachelor days, she also reportedly once gave the duke a “Grow Your Own Girlfriend” kit for Christmas.
Kate’s penchant for a jape is a quality her husband Prince William’s mother, Diana would likely have appreciated. The former Princess of Wales, who tragically died following a car crash in 1997, was a style icon and tireless campaigner for a number of imporant causes, including the banning of landmines.
But she was also known for her mischievous sense of humour, and fondness for a cheeky joke. William, who was just 15 when his mother died, previously recalled one of her more memorable stunts.
Princess Kate greets excited crowds in Italy
In a 2017 ITV interview marking the anniversary of her passing, the Prince described an episode during his teenage years, when his mother arranged for some of the world’s famous supermodels to greet him on his return home.
“Just outside this room where we are now, she organised when I came home from school to have Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell waiting at the top of the stairs,” he said.
The adolescent prince was “completely and utterly sort of awestruck”. He added: “That was a very funny memory that’s lived with me forever about her, loving and embarrassing and being the sort of joker.”
Diana also liked having fun with her younger son Prince Harry too. Former royal butler Grant Harrold previously revealed a surprising stocking gift she got the Duke.
“She’d spend hours looking for jokey things for their stockings,” he explained. “One year, Harry got fake dog poo.”
Diana had the two boys with then-Prince Charles before their divorce in 1996.
